  • Summarise the story in your own words: is this is an example of hard news or soft news?
--> This article is about whether or not the UK should leave the EU with a trading deal that is similar to Canadas deal when they left the EU. The trading deal is that for the next 7 years we export good with tariffs set by the EU and then after that, the UK has the freedom to export and import good anywhere they want. This allows them to have trade deals with any country they want. However, the EU is not allowing this to happen and the public that voted leave also agree with the EU. The EU and the public believe we need border control and the UK do not have the technology to do this hence the reason for a disagreement. This article is an example of hard news because it is about the current affairs going on with the government and the EU. The type of news value this would be linked to this type of story would be familiarity and it something British people can relate to since it is a huge issue that could have a negative effect on us.
  • Explain how or why this story appeals to an audience (use media terminology and theory here).
--> This story appeals to the audience through surveillance as it provides information about what's going on with the EU and UK Brexit deals and how it will affect everyone living here,- Blumer and Katz 'Uses and Gratifications theory.' Another audience appeal would be people are dependent on the media to keep them updated on what's going on with Brexit and if it will have a negative effect. Therefore, can give people a lot of anxiety because the deadline is near and there is no trade deal.
  • Comment on the story: to what extent does it reflect the values and ideologies of the newspaper? Is this an example of quality journalism or simply clickbait
--> I think that this story does reflect the values and ideologies of a newspaper as it a story that people would want to read because it is an ongoing matter. This means it would be an example of quality journalism because it includes the news values such as familiarity and continuity. The audience would be wondering why Brexit deals still haven't been sorted out since the deadline for leaving the EU is so close.
