General
1) Why did you choose the text you are analyzing?
--> I choose to analyze this text because it is one of my favourite shows and in this show, there is a mixture of genres. Making it more interesting. The main genre is Crime, but there are elements of Thriller, Romance, Drama and some sort of Action as well.

2) In what context did you encounter it?
--> Trailer on Netflix

3) What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
--> Instantly I knew it was a Crime related series however, it changed my thought when I actually started to watch because the amount of romance and Crime is very proportionate which want to be given out through the context.

4) To what genre did you initially assign the text?
-->Crime

5) What is your experience of this genre?
--> I have watched one other series which is very similar to Power which is called Empire and I watch a lot of crime related movies as well.

6) What subject matter and basic themes is the text concerned with?
--> The subject matter would be drugs which are transported across the country and sold to earn money to survive. Furthermore, it is two men who grew up together in the hood and were told to live life like this.

7) How typical of the genre is this text in terms of content?
-->

8) What expectations do you have about texts in this genre?
-->The expectation of the text is a lot of violence, love making, and crime. This is because the trailer gave that idea.

9) Have you found any formal generic labels for this particular text (where)?
--> It say 'Ghost never dies' and the image is very serious.This could mean that the character is undefeatable and can get away with anything because he is like a ghost he never leaves a trace of anything behind. Furthermore, the fire could mean there is some type of conflict going on and he is prepared to end it and his face shows that.

10) What generic labels have others given the same text?
--> People might interpret this as a drama because it never it ends. Furthermore, people might think that the lower class people turn out like that. Overall, they might be very stereotypical.

11) Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
--> The typography shows that it might be connected to crime and drama and the copy gives a more definite sense that it is linked to the crime. The image gives a more Thriller sense because of the seriousness of the character and the fire as well.

12) To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
-->This text stretches the conventions as the police shown isnt normal street police. Because of the profile of the drug dealers, we are more exposed to the DEA agents and the higher detectives solving the case, rather than just the police busting through the door in an attempt to catch the dealers.

13) Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
--> There is a part when one of the criminals has an affair with an agent which has no link to the crime but more to drama, however.

14) Which conventions seem more like those of a different genre (and which genre(s))?
--> There is a lot of romance in this and it makes you forget about the main genre which is the crime.

15) What familiar motifs or images are used?
--> When the protagonist is arrested and put in jail when the opposition is shot and killed.

Mode of address
1) What sort of audience did you feel that the text was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre)?
--> I think the target audience is teenagers and young adults. Furthermore, it can be aimed at people who can relate to the main theme of the show. For example, lower classed people who live in areas where crime rate is really high. Also, where illegal drugs are sold and transported around the country.

2) How does the text address you?
--> The text addresses me as a lower/middle-class citizen as I see the same kind of issues that occur within suburbs.

3) What sort of person does it assume you are?
-->18+ and someone from the lower class or lives in the hood.

4) What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender, and ethnicity?
-->It would assume I am a black male in the lower/middle class as this target audience watch these kinds of programs. The protagonist makes it out of the area where the target audience can relate to.

5) What interests does it assume you have?
--> Crime and violence.
