Genre Factsheet 03:   1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? -->  Star Wars and Star Trek us e  recognizable i conographies of Science fiction. They both share enough characteristics to be considered the same type of genre (Sci-fi). 2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre? --> Genre can be indicated in the way the story is told through its narrative. Reception Theory Dominant, Preferred or Hegemonic Reading : The preferred reading would be that the audience would be that Reebok are using a successful rapper 50 cent to promote their brand. Since they are doing this they will have an increase in sales and therefore become more popular. The Negotiated Reading: The  negotiated reading  is that Reebok has c hosen to dress 50 Cent in a hat, chains and a vest which is normally associated with gangs and violence. However, the audience could read this is he came from gangs and crime but he still bettered his life, and that anyone can improve their lifestyle by using products from Reebok.  The Oppositional Reading: An  oppositional reading  is the way  that the image is portrayed. The use of hats, chains, vests and criminal fingerprints could suggest that Reebok are encouraging criminal activities and promoting their products to people who are in gangs.

Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts? - Icons are signs that have a physical resemblance to the signified-the thing being represented. The Index signs show evidence of what is being represented. Icons are used in everyday life, for example, a wheelchair icon is to show disabled people where to go use the toilet or what is available to them likewise for the men and women. The denotation is a famous basketball player- Kobe Bryant- holding a basketball. The connotation of this is that this famous player just won a game and he looks like he is screaming in victory. It might also connote motivation and inspiration towards the audience to do the things they are good at again and again. The colours are bright and the yellow stands out, which will easily catch the eye of the audience and make them wanna actually look ay the advert. The copy shows that the advert is somehow motivating the audience and making sure that they understand the message being given through the advert. The font of the advert is very modern which shows it is mainly aimed at the younger generation rather than the older.
