Read the Media Magazine feature 'Representation old and new'. This is in MM51 on page 6 - go to  our Media Magazine archive  to find the article. Complete the following tasks: 1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies? Representation is important in media studies because it is a process which the media presents the 'real world' to an audience and the various ways it portrays this through dominant and alternative ways. 2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media? Through the simple picture of the paparazzi took of Kate Middleton can cause many different meaning through media. Her actions, location, facial expressions and clothes are all used in the media as a scapegoat to label and portray her in a certain way which maybe be incorrect and create a negative portrayal of her. 3) Summarise the section 'The how, who and why of media representation' in 50 words. 4) How does Stuart Hall'

Representation 1) List the different  people / groups  represented in the trailer (men/women/Americans etc.) -Men -Women -Americans -French Villian 2) For each group you identify, decide whether the representation is a  dominant  or  alternative  portrayal. Explain why you think this. -Men-->  dominant . The main character is a male. He is also the  hero  that is shown with a strong and determined character. These are usually the traits that people think of when a male is a focus . -Women--> dominant . There are rarely any shots of women in the trailer. The only ones that do include women show them to either be crying or wearing revealing clothing . This reinforces the  stereotype  that women are weak and inferior to men. -Americans-  dominant . Americans in the trailer are shown to be civilised and the ones with good morals. America is also portrayed as a beautiful, crime-free country.  - French Villian- 3) What  stereotypes  can you identify in the trailer? - -&

She focused a lot on the darker skin people due to the fact that they have limited resources compared to lighter toned people which allowed it to become successful.
