Semiotics

Example 1: Icon

Example 2: Index

Example 3: Symbol
2.Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?

- Icons are signs that have a physical resemblance to the signified-the thing being represented.
The Index signs show evidence of what is being represented. Icons are used in everyday life, for example, a wheelchair icon is to show disabled people where to go use the toilet or what is available to them likewise for the men and women. Indexes have a direct connection with what is being signified, which means it links with the icon and is very similar to it.

3) Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?

4) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons, indexes or symbols. Why did the media product fail?

The media text that failed to communicate the meaning would be the Pepsi advert that Kendall Jenner was recently in this year. The message Pepsi was meant to give out was a loving and caring one. They also wanted to connoted that this brand brings everyone together in peace and brings joy within society/community. In addition, they also were trying to say that the world is one unity. However, that message was not given out and it actually gave the audience a different meaning. The audience thought it was aimed at a social justice group "Black Lives Matter" which caused a lot of controversies. This is because it said that a can of Pepsi would stop police from hurting innocent people.

5) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) that successfully uses icons or indexes to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.
