Representation & Identity: Factsheet blog task

Use our brilliant Media Factsheet archive on the M: drive Media Shared (M:\Resources\A Level\Media Factsheets) to find Media Factsheet #72 on Collective Identity. Save it to USB or email it to yourself so you have access to the reading for homework. Read the whole of Factsheet and answer the following questions to complete our introductory work on collective identity and David Gauntlett:

1) What is collective identity? Write your own definition in as close to 50 words as possible.
Collective identity is group of individuals which share the same traditions, beliefs and similar understanding of the world that surrounds them.

2) Complete the task on the factsheet (page 1) - write a list of as many things as you can that represent Britain. What do they have in common? Have you represented the whole of Britain or just one aspect/viewpoint?

  • Tea & Biscuits
  • London
  • English Breakfast
  • Football & Rugby
  • Public Transport

3) How does James May's Top Toys offer a nostalgic representation of Britain?
As James Mays is a 48 year old presenter and is quite popular, he tends to attract a elder audience which in their youth played with the toys and experienced a stress free life which gives them the nostalgic feeling when their lives where simpler.

4) How has new technology changed collective identity?
As new technology being introduced in today's age it attract a larger audience to the current youth which experience and use new technology such as modern computer games which effect their lives and give an apparent failure to use their imagination to play with toys.

5) What phrase does David Gauntlett (2008) use to describe this new focus on identity?
"Identity is complicated: everyone thinks they have got one." This suggests that the new focus for peoples identity is on social media and how they present themselves to other people.

6) What does Gauntlett suggest about creativity and identity?
Gauntlett suggests that identity is in fact complicated and people often think they have their own personal identity which portrays them when in fact they don't and need to pay closer attention to how they use media. He also suggests that we should look at the media as something that triggers for experiences and for making things happen.

7) How does the Shaun of the Dead Facebook group provide an example of Henry Jenkins' theory of interpretive communities online?
The Shaun of the Dead Facebook group is a group of people who shared the same experience from watching the film, 'Hey, I also learnt that word'. This is an example of collective identity and how a group of people with similar experiences and ideas can come together to create a community which contributes to the creation and identification of their personal identity.
